Six months ago, I sat down and logged into the Apple.com Quicktime trailers section and saw an intriguing ad for a movie called simple ’1-18-08.’ Curious, I decided to watch the trailer… and I’ve been on the edge of my seat in anticipation since. I woke up this morning and my first thought was ‘dude, it’s Friday… I’m seeing Cloverfield today.’
I’m pretty sure I’m not the only person all this hype has gotten to, either. My friend was just as excited as I, and so was half my family. Yes, there’s been a huge question floating around as to whether it lives up to its hype.
It doesn’t disappoint.
It uses the handheld-cam as a medium, a lot like the Blair Witch Project but under a different premise — they’re filming a fellow named Rob’s going-away-to-Japan party when things go bad. The camera-man says, ‘I just think it would be good, you know? For people to know how it went down.’
I recognized none of the actors in this movie at all. I also believed every performance on-screen. Everyone was chosen perfectly. The acting and storytelling, the visuals, everything, astounded me. It’s beyond me how they demolished New York like they did (special effects, yes, but damn they were good).
This is easily the best movie of the decade.
I don’t know what else to say… For the past three hours I’ve been in a stupor, this movie is so good. I’m beyond words, really.
It’s a piece of art.
